viking cruise part 1

In May, I got to go on an incredible Viking River cruise through the Rhein valley with my dad. The seven day cruise traveled through four countries and between the excursions and our tour guides, we really had an opportunity to get a great feel for each city.

Day 1: We started in Basel, Switzerland where we only had a few hours to explore the city. The jetlag was pretty brutal, as we hadn't slept much on the plane, but it didn't stop us from getting our fill of gelato and taking plenty of pictures of this quiet city.

Day 2: Breisach, Germany is home to the black forest. We spent the morning driving up through the hills, wineries, and quaint towns to get to a more touristy spot in the heart of the forest. I skipped the black forest cake tasting and cuckoo clock demonstrations to sit by a stream and soak in the beautiful surroundings. Later in the day we explored Breisach, dad had to scour the streets for an ATM when we accidentally ordered beers and sausages and tried to pay with a card (they only took Euros!). Thankfully they were very gracious and we were able to pay before we finished our beers! Fueled by (more) gelato, we climbed about a million stairs to get an amazing view of the Rhine valley and the surrounding neighborhoods.

Day 3: Strasbourg, France was one of my favorite cities. Home to the colorful Petit France, surrounded by canals, and right across the river from Germany. It was such a beautiful lively city that was full of music, beautiful people, and the BEST pastries I've ever had!

Day 4: Heidelberg, Germany is a University town and another one of my favorite places. We started the morning at the Heidelberg castle, which had incredible views of the town below. After a tour we made our way down to grab some more pastries and explore the town. I loved all the alleys and the way each street seemed to be more colorful than the last.

Stay tuned for part 2, coming tomorrow!
